Participating in Clinical Trials & Research Studies-- What Everyone Should Know
- What is a Clinical Trial?
A clinical trial is a carefully designed investigation of the effects of a drug, medical treatment, device, or behavior (e.g. exercise) on a group of participants. The protocol is a set of guidelines for a clinical trial. The protocol describes the study, how it will be conducted and who may participate. Some clinical trials have participants complete a questionnaire; others require test or certain medications; still others involve more extensive treatments or behaviors. Before participating, you will be given information about the type of clinical trial and the potential risks and benefits.
