The Application Process

Appl;ication ProcessWake Forest University School of Medicine participates in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). Formal application for admission to the fi rst-year class must be submitted through AMCAS. Appropriate information about this procedure may be obtained from premedical advisors; the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Admissions Offi ce; or at http://aamc.org/stuapps. Applications for admission to Wake Forest University School of Medicine are received from AMCAS from June 15 to the November 1 deadline.

Applicants are encouraged to review the annual volume of the AAMC publication, Medical School Admission Requirements. Because AMCAS will not forward applications received after November 1, students are urged to apply as early as possible. Upon receipt of the AMCAS application, the Committee on Admissions evaluates each applicant and selectively sends an online secondary application. All others are notifi ed of their status. The secondary application includes a request for a nonrefundable processing fee of $55, and for an evaluation by the applicant’s premedical advisory committee or from two individuals who have taught or supervised the applicant. After the secondary application, MCAT scores, and evaluation(s) are received, the completed secondary application is reviewed, and competitive candidates are invited for an interview.

Approximately 9% of all applicants are asked to visit Wake Forest University School of Medicine for interviews from September to March. Academic achievement, academic improvement, MCAT scores, state (or country) of residence, and evaluations are considered in selecting applicants for interview. Thus, all applicants for interview are considered competitively. By the end of April, all applicants are notifi ed of the action of the Committee on Admissions, whether it be acceptance, placement on the waiting list, or nonacceptance. Those retained on the waiting list are considered for vacancies as accepted applicants withdraw; this list is maintained through orientation week. An applicant who is accepted is asked to respond in writing within two weeks. Upon acceptance of an offer, a holding place fee must be submitted. This fee, which is credited toward tuition, is refundable until May 1. Criminal background checks are required for all entering students. Application for Early Decision can be made through AMCAS from June 1 to August 1. Early Decision candidates are informed of their program status in September and off ers of acceptance made by October 1. The MCAT is required for this program.
