Overview of the Master of Science in Health-System Pharmacy Program

Program Goal

The goal of the Master of Science in Health System Pharmacy is to prepare pharmacists for leadership positions in health care. In order to accomplish this goal the program will provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to assume a variety of roles and responsibilities. Our graduates should be able to serve as vibrant, committed professionals with a focus on improving patients’ health, healthcare delivery and the profession of pharmacy. This will occur through both didactic education and experiential opportunities in class and in the workplace.

The design of the program can best described in terms of the didactic education and experiential training.

Experiential training

Experiential training consists of what most would consider the typical “residency” training component. The residency portion can be divided into a PGY1 and PGY2 residency year. Each year will coincide with the didactic education component at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The PGY1 year is designed to improve the resident’s clinical knowledge. The resident will participate in seven 6-week rotations, including an ASHP required Drug Information rotation. The resident has his or her choice of four clinical rotations, and two clinical management rotations. The clinical management rotations serve as a hybrid for both clinical and management experiences.

The PGY2 year is designed to focus and develop knowledge in areas of administration and leadership. Experiences are divided into 4 core rotations including financial management, operations, clinical services, and Director of Pharmacy. There are several additional elective choices that can range from 2 weeks to 2 months in duration depending on the resident’s particular areas of interest.

In addition to rotations the experiential training offers many other opportunities including six sigma certification, committee membership (hospital, local, and national levels), project development, and much more.

Didactic Education

Didactic education occurs during both the PGY1 and PGY2 years in collaboration with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and School of Public Health. The course work is designed to provide a solid foundation of administrative knowledge that can be directly applied to the real life world of health care and pharmacy management.

Courses are divided between the UNC-Eshelman School of Pharmacy (Currently ranked 3rd in US News and World Report among school of pharmacy) and UNC-Gillings School of Global Public Health (Currently ranked 2nd in US News and World Report among schools of public health).

Course work is available through a highly advanced distance learning program that allows students to attend lecture in real time from the comfort of their own home or office. The unique design of the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, and UNC-Hospital cooperative program allows residents from all 3 sites to work collaboratively in their course work.

For more information on specific course work please visit
http://pharmacy.unc.edu/faculty-research/divisions/ppee/ms-program/ms-curriculum

History

History
The Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy was offered at the University of North Carolina from 1969 to 1996. After a brief hiatus the program has been recently reintroduced as of the Fall, 2008. Successful graduate students will join over 200 past graduates who have entered the workforce. Their careers have taken them to numerous pharmacy directorships, hospital executive positions, executive informatics positions, clinical leadership positions, and many more directions, both domestically and internationally.

The program has now grown to include residency positions at three sites (Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, and University of North Carolina Hospital), which allows the administration residents to practice in different settings, while allowing collaboration in didactic education.
