We are aware that the rotation schedule for our school may be different from others and are prepared to allow for some overlap, within reason, to accommodate the needs of visiting students.

The fellowship is designed to provide a complete experience in upper extremity problems. At the completion of the fellowship, the participants should be competent to treat congenital and acquired disorders from the brachial plexus to the fingertips in either a private practice or academic setting.

The orthopaedic sports medicine fellows spend time assigned primarily to each member of the clinical sports medicine faculty in three month blocks. This includes both operating room and outpatient clinic experience according to the faculty member's schedule, but will generally consist of two days in the clinic and two days in the operating room each week. Operating room coverage assignments are made by the chief resident and therefore the fellows function as primary surgeon, teaching assistant, or first assistant according to the particular case and resident availability.

The fellows are active in the extremely productive research program of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Each fellow has one day per week of protected research time and is required to bring at least one project to completion with a paper in publishable format.

The educational program will be centered around clinical rotations with the two primary sports medicine attendings on the sports medicine service. This will include operating room and inpatient experiences at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Outpatient education will take place at the CompRehab Plaza, which houses all orthopaedic surgery outpatient clinics, outpatient physical therapy clinics, and a state of the art motion monitor.

Trauma Fellowship

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers a one-year fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology. The fellowship focuses on the management and surgery of the poly-trauma patient with emphasis on fractures of the acetabulum, pelvis, spine, calcaneus and complex upper and lower extremity injuries. Extensive training in the management of nonunions, malunions and infections is also addressed during the year. Clinical research and resident teaching are an important aspect of this program.

Residents actively participate in ongoing research within the department, or they pursue independent research projects. Physician Scientist Training Program 7 Year Pathway

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine offers a residency position for a medical school graduate interested in pursuing a career in academic Orthopaedic Surgery. This 7-year program begins with two years of laboratory work followed by the standard 5-year Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) Orthopedic Surgery residency. In the first two years the research fellow will be guided by a Clinical and Basic Science Mentor. Duties include the design and execution of clinical and basic science research, submitting abstracts and grant applications, and participation in Orthopaedic journal clubs and morning conference. The Physician Scientist will have no ward or call responsibilities during the 2 year research fellowship.

Through experience in surgery as well as in outpatient clinics, the house officer receives instruction in all aspects of adult and pediatric orthopaedic surgery. Diagnostic and operative arthroscopy, microsurgery, hand surgery, trauma, adult reconstruction, spine, foot and ankle, and rehabilitative medicine are emphasized. An active sports medicine program coordinates the care of our university athletes as well as those at the high school level.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has established an outpatient clinic to be used exclusively by the orthopaedic residents to enhance their pre and post operative patient care experience. The clinics are fully staffed with nurses, patient assistants, a receptionist, transcription support, etc. Each resident designates the number of patients scheduled to be seen. Essentially, the resident clinics have all the same amenities as the clinics run by an attending physician.
