News

  • WFU Medical Engineering graduate Timothy Persons (PhD, 2001) received a Director of National Intelligence Fellows Award, a $200,000 grant, for his US intelligence research. Dr. Persons performed his imaging science research in the Department of Radiation Oncology under Dan Bourland, PhD, and is the technical director for the Disruptive Technology Office within the US National Intelligence Office.

  • The Department of Radiation Oncology grieves with Virginia Tech at the senseless tragedy that took place on Monday, April 16, 2007. The VT-WFU School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences (SBES) lost a valued colleague and SBES faculty member in the death of Kevin Granata, PhD. The 6th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium, held May 10, 2007 at Virginia Tech, opened with a memorial tribute to Dr. Granata through a significant slide presentation that had been put together by his Biomechanical Lab students and staff. Congratulations to Dr. Wally Grant, SBES Director, on his full recovery from the injuries he received during the same incident. We wish the Virginia Tech community a continued rapid healing from this event.

  • Congratulations to Todd Atwood, MS, Biomedical Engineering/Radiation Oncology graduate student, for winning First Place in the Poster category at the recent SBES 6th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium, held May 10, 2007 at Virginia Tech. Todd's PhD research, titled "Monitoring tumor microvascularture development in a rodent model of human GBM using DCE-MRI", is being performed in the 7T MRI animal imaging facility under the direction of Radiation Oncology MR physicist Dr. Jian-Ming Zhu.
