Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Immunologic Diseases is a Section within the Department of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest University Health Sciences.  The section consists of 22 clinical and research faculty with interests in a wide variety of pulmonary, critical care and allergy/ immunology topics.  Active research is performed in diverse areas including clinical and basic studies in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung injury, occupational pulmonary disease and clinical problems in pulmonary medicine.  There is also an active Genomics Center that investigates genetic susceptibility in respiratory diseases closely associated with the Section.  External grant support from governmental and industrial sources exceeds $3 million annually.  Specific clinical expertise includes the evaluation and treatment of obstructive airway disease, lung cancer, sleep disorders, occupational lung disease and critical care.  The mission of the Section is to provide optimal patient care as well as to continue to have a nationally recognized comprehensive clinical and basic science research program that will advance our understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of respiratory and allergic diseases.
