Research

The Research Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry currently has grant awards totaling over $2 million dollars in research funding for studying mental health.

Faculty interests and expertise range widely, with specialties including anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory, addiction, quality of life and brain stimulation therapies.

Some examples of research activity include the Department’s participation in studies involving investigative devices in brain stimulation for treatment of depression. A registry study for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), observing patient response to Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy, and non-VNS patient response to any other TRD treatment, is currently being conducted.

Some other studies taking place in the Department of Psychiatry include two insomnia studies: one focusing upon treatment for depression and insomnia; another for primary insomnia using an investigative drug.

Also currently under way, is a study that tests whether a drug used with Alzheimer’s patients to improve memory and other cognitive functions will help patients who have had brain radiation treatment for primary or metastatic tumors.

The Department also works in collaboration with other departments; currently on studies that include research in brain function under alcohol and marijuana use.
