Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Residency Training is a unique experience and through this overview we would like to acquaint you with our program. Our goal is to provide excellent, broad-based, individualized training to child psychiatry residents, and produce child and adolescent psychiatrists knowledgeable in all areas of psychiatry including clinical care, systems of care, and evidence-based development.
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is an integrated health care system that operates acute care, rehabilitation and long-term care beds, outpatient services, and community health and information centers. North Carolina Baptist Hospital is an 821-bed teaching hospital that is the region's main tertiary referral center. Brenner Children's Hospital & Health Services, a 160-bed "hospital within a hospital" that serves young critically or chronically ill patients and conducts 24 outreach clinics.
Rotations
There are several rotations that are required as part of the training. The sites for training are either at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center or at community facilities with which we have affiliations. The rotations are designed to expose residents to various patient populations and systems of treatment. Rotations at the medical center include: Pediatric Neurology, Amos Cottage Rehabilitation Center (a developmental disabilities facility), Consultation/Liaison, Inpatient Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Unit, Normal Development at the Child Care Center, and Child Guidance Outpatient. External rotation sites include: Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school-based health clinics, UNC Greensboro, and the Department of Justice.
Service
During training, residents are given responsibilities which allow them to become comfortable with providing evaluations and treatment for children and adolescents using multimodal approaches. At the various outpatient clinics, the residents provide direct service to children and adolescents and also work closely with professionals and students of other disciplines to include general psychiatry residents, medical students, social workers and social work students, and psychologists. When on the inpatient service, residents provide direct patient care as well as supervision to general psychiatry residents and medical students. They also coordinate care with the rest of the inpatient treatment team in a multidisciplinary setting. Residents also have a senior administrative experience which gives them the opportunity to be involved with administrative decision making.
Didactics
The weekly seminars include: Introduction to Child Psychiatry, Child Development, Infant Psychiatry, Psychotherapy Seminar, Knowledge Base Seminar, Psychopharmacology Seminar, Neuropsychiatry Seminar, Consultation-Liaison Seminar, and a Classics Reading course. These seminars are led by either full-time faculty or community faculty. Journal Clubs and Case Conferences are held bimonthly. Department Grand Rounds is held bimonthly. Research opportunities are definitely available, and participation is strongly encouraged, and there is a formal, required research seminar.
It is our sincere belief that our graduates are well trained, competent and caring, and go on to represent us well in their future careers. We are a small collegial group, and the training program plays a large and important role in the functioning of our department as well as our community. We believe you will find our program an exciting challenge. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to meeting with you when you visit.
