The area’s mild climate, beautifully-maintained courses and spectacular scenery make Forsyth County a golfer’s paradise. Thirteen courses, eight of them public, are open for play during most seasons of the year.
Winston-Salem’s more than 50 neighborhood parks provide swimming pools, tennis courts, softball and baseball fields, indoor basketball courts and lakes for fishing and boating.
Hanes Park, with the city’s largest tennis complex, a track and playing fields, is only two blocks away from the Medical Center. Both the YMCA and the YWCA are within walking distance.
With a professional baseball team (the Warthogs) in Winston-Salem and a major collegiate athletic program at Wake Forest University, the calendar for spectator sports is kept full.
Wake Forest University is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, probably the strongest basketball conference in the country. The University’s football team, which plays its home games in Groves Stadium, each year meets some of the highly-ranked college teams. Its golf team is a former NCAA national champion.
Winston-Salem is acclaimed as the industrial capital of the dynamic state of North Carolina. More than 240 manufacturing industries and over 43,000 employees are located in the Greater Twin City area.
The Medical Center, with more than 9,600 employees, is the largest employer in the area.
The industrial community includes the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, The Hanes Group of Sara Lee Corp., AT&T Company, GMAC and Westinghouse. Wachovia Corporation's and Krispy Kreme Doughnut's headquarters are located here.
The manufacturing payroll totals more than $695 million annually.
