License Registration
All medical licenses in the State of North Carolina are required to be registered annually. This annual registration is to take place on the physician’s birthday. The annual registration should be completed online at NCMedBoard.org
You will be sent a notice by the Board approximately 45 days prior to your birthday. At that time you can go online and register. House Officers will also receive a reminder to register from the House Staff Office. Maintaining a license is the responsibility of the individual house officer. Failure to register your license, in a timely manner can lead to loss of license. You must have an “active” license in order to continue in a residency training program. Registration for a Residency Training License is $125.00, for a full North Carolina Medical License the fee is $175.00.

Drug Enforcement Authority (DEA)
When entering a residency training program and obtaining a residency training license, the institution will issue you a DEA number to use within the parameters of your training program. If you obtain a Full North Carolina Medical Licence and plan to use that license to “Moonlight”, you must apply for and obtain your own DEA number. You can obtain an application for a DEA number on their website
www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/online_forms.htm.

United States Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE)
To apply for USMLE Step III you must go directly to the Federation of State Medical Boards website (http://www.fsmb.org/).  At this site you will find all requirements, fees and the appropriate application to download and complete.  You are not required to apply for a full North Carolina medical license at the time you apply for Step III.

Please contact the House Staff Office with any questions or concerns.
