The North Carolina Baptist Hospital offers first-year appointments to comply with the recommendations of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education.
Categorical Programs are first-year positions that are supervised by one discipline and are designed to prepare the individual for a specific specialty. Two types of categorical programs are offered-one in which the content of the program is entirely within the discipline under which it is listed and one that may include some diversification through assignments to other disciplines. Both types of categorical programs are acceptable to their respective specialty. These programs are not unlike the previous "straight" internships.
Categorical-Diversified Programs are first-year programs that will be planned, sponsored and supervised by a single, approved residency program as a part of that residency’s program of graduate medical education, the content of which need not be limited to the single specialty of the sponsoring residency program but may include experience in two or more specialty fields as determined by the sponsoring program.
The Medical Center offers training programs for house officers in the following programs which are accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education of the American Medical Association and by the respective specialty boards.
