Research on the effectiveness, safety, mechanisms, costs and practices of complementary and integrative medicine is a high priority at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Numerous investigators in different departments and centers participate in these activities. Research is supported by intramural and extramural funding. We aim to be national leaders for research in complementary and integrative medicine, thereby contributing to enhanced understanding and improved clinical care.
Our studies cover the continuum of care including:
-
-
Basic science investigations of the mechanism of action of complementary therapies such as Omega-3 fatty acids, soy, and healing touch
Translational Research, bringing basic science into clinical practice and the community.
- |
Clinical trials of the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of complementary therapies such as Omega-3 fatty acids, soy, healing touch, music, and yoga
- |
Outcomes research involving data collection from a non-randomized clinic population to assess efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of particular treatment approaches or combinations of treatment approaches in a real-life situation. Data gleaned from outcomes research is critical for eventual integration of CAM therapies
- |
Surveys of the attitudes and clinical behaviors of various health care professionals toward CAM, all of which have significant implications for consumer healthcare options.
- |
Systematic reviews of the literature which evaluates the existing scientific evidence for CAM, thereby providing clinicians and consumers with the highest level of evidence on safety and efficacy of specific therapies for different conditions, and providing investigators with information that will assist in the planning of future research. |
