Critical Care Specialty Residency
Purpose
The purpose of the PGY-2 Critical Care residency is to train residents to provide pharmaceutical care for critically ill patients and to achieve a distinguished career as a critical care clinical pharmacist. Upon completion of the program, the pharmacist will be prepared to provide specialized pharmaceutical care in a health system and/or clinical academic setting.
Clinical experiences
Clinical experiences are available in each of the following patient populations:
Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT)
Coronary Care Unit
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care
Medical Intensive Care
Neurosurgical Intensive Care
Surgical Intensive Care
Trauma Intensive Care
Vascular Surgery
Burn Intensive Care
Infectious Diseases
Emergency Medicine/Toxicology
Nutrition Support
Acute Pain/Palliative Care
Solid Organ Transplant
Nephrology
Neonatal ICU
Pediatric ICU
Rotations
Flexibility allows the resident to tailor experiences to meet their individual interests and career goals.
12, one month rotations
In July, the resident will spend time learning the distribution system in the Critical Care Satellite
December will be left open as a research and administration month
2 months of Medical ICU & 1 month of Cardiothoracic Surgery are required
Remaining 7 rotations are selected from the list of 17 electives above
All rotations precepted by qualified clinical specialists

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program. Presentation opportunities include:
Pharmacotherapy CE Program
Journal Club
Case Presentations
Staff Development presentations
In-services on rotations
AHEC Presentations
Project Presentation at the Southeastern Residency Conference
Presentation at a national meeting such as ASHP Midyear, ACCP, or SCCM.
Precepting
By precepting students, the critical care resident will have the opportunity to refine their teaching skills and further deepen their own clinical knowledge base.
WFUBMC is a rotation site for students from the University of North Carolina and Campbell University Schools of Pharmacy (approximately 160 student months per year)
