Infectious Diseases Specialty Residency
WFUBMC offers a one-year ID residency designed to provide experiences in all areas of ID pharmacotherapy. An emphasis is placed on clinical practice and antimicrobial stewardship. One position is available each year.
Rotations
Flexibility allows residents to tailor their experiences to meet their individual career goals. The residency year is divided into eleven 1-month rotations (plus orientation). An example year is provided below:
· Two 1-month rotations in each of the following core services (6 months
total)
- ID Consult Service
- ID Specialty Clinic
- Antibiotic Support Team
· Microbiology research laboratory (1 month)
· Clinical research (1 month)
· Choice of three electives (3 months total)
- Medicine Intensive Care Unit - Solid Organ Transplant
- Pediatric ID Consult Service - General Surgery
- Blood Marrow Transplant - Nephrology
- Internal Medicine - One or more additional months in the
core ID services listed above
Presentations
Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program. Anticipated presentation experiences include:
· 1-hour NC CE-accredited program · Journal club
· Case conference presentation · Inservices on rotations
· Project presentation at the Southeastern Residency Conference
· Lecture to the first year Physician Assistant School class
Precepting
By precepting students, the ID resident will refine their teaching skills and further deepen their own clinical knowledge base.
· WFUBMC is a rotation site for students from the University of North Carolina and Campbell University Schools of Pharmacy (approximately 160 student months per year)
Projects
· The resident will complete two independent research projects: 1) a clinical project for which
IRB application and approval is generally required, and 2) a microbiology research project.
Publication of both projects is encouraged. Either poster presentation at an appropriate conference or formal manuscript preparation is acceptable.
