Critical Care Specialty Residency

WFUBMC offers a one-year, specialty residency in critical care.  It is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of critical care experiences in a progressive environment committed to pharmaceutical care and education. One position is available each year.

Clinical experiences

Clinical experiences are available in each of the following patient populations:

·        Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT)   ·       Coronary Care

·        Cardiothoracic Intensive Care                ·       Medical Intensive Care

·        Neurosurgical Intensive Care                 ·       Surgical Intensive Care

·        Trauma/Burn Intensive Care                  ·       Vascular Surgery

·        Infectious Disease                                 ·       Emergency Medicine

·        Nutrition Support                                  ·       Pain Management

·        Pediatric Intensive Care                        ·       Neonatal Intensive Care

 

Rotations

Flexibility allows the resident to tailor experiences to meet their individual interests and career goals.

      ·    12 one-month rotations

      ·    All rotations precepted by 
            qualified clinical specialists

 

   ·    In July, the resident will spend time learning the 
         distribution system in the Critical Care Satellite

   ·    December will be left open as a research and administration month

   ·   Remaining 10 rotations are selected from a list of 14

        electives

Presentations

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program.  Presentation opportunities include:

      ·    Pharmacotherapy CE Program     ·    Journal Club

      ·    Case Presentations                  ·     Staff Development presentations

      ·    Inservices on rotations

      ·    Project Presentation at the Southeastern Residency Conference

·    Presentation at a national meeting such as ASHP Midyear, ACCP, or SCCM.

Precepting

      ·     By precepting students, the critical care resident will have the
             opportunity to refine their teaching skills and further deepen their 
             own clinical knowledge base.

      ·    WFUBMC is a rotation site for students from the University of North Carolina and Campbell University Schools of Pharmacy (approximately 160 student months per year)

      ·    Precepting responsibilities available on many rotations

Projects

The critical care resident will complete:

-        ·    a minimum of one independent research
  project

-        ·     a manuscript for
   publication      

·   Mentoring provided by pharmacy
    preceptors
