Research Career Development Core The Research Career Development Core has nine specific aims: - To recruit and carefully select promising junior investigators for research career development entailing research projects that are varied, but that integrate well with the general theme of this OAIC, and whose careers will be promoted by the Core resources of the OAIC.
- To provide the financial infrastructure for talented junior faculty that will provide protected time adequate for development, travel for exposure and visibility, specific pedagogic activities, information resources, and administrative support.
- To promote acquisition of skills required for a successful independent research career of junior faculty through a structured mentorship program that fosters translational approaches.
- To generate specific educational plans that emphasize development of skills for translating between basic and clinical research and clinical research and practice, incorporating other important topics such as conduct of research in humans and animals, appropriate attention to gender and ethnic issues, bioinformatics, and biostatistics.
- To promote ethical and safety concepts for conducting clinical and translational research.
- To generate specific professional development plans that emphasize the development of skills in grant, manuscript and abstract preparation, oral presentation, study and staff management, networking, leadership, and mentoring.
- To assure quality of the RCDC by monitoring progress of trainees using specific milestones of expected achievements selectively applied to each trainee. Examples include: formal and informal presentations within the OAIC, presentations at national meetings, formal associations with appropriate national societies, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and submission of training and/or peer- reviewed research grants within specified timetables.
- To foster interactions with other Cores of the OAIC.
- To foster multidisciplinary team research and promote interactions with other OAICs.
