Anatomic Pathology Laboratory Services

Polymerase Chain Reaction Laboratory

 

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-based technology allows detection of DNA or RNA that may be specific for certain microorganisms, genes, or gene products. Currently the PCR lab offers the following:

  • BCR-abl
  • Cytomegalovirus
  • Enterovirus
  • Epstein Barr virus
  • Herpes simplex virus
  • Herpes varicella/zoster virus
  • Herpes VIII (KSHV)
  • Human papilloma virus
  • Immunoglobulin heavy chain
  • Toxoplasma

All specimens submitted for analysis must be accompanied by a requistion form containing the following information:

  • Patient name,
  • ordering physician and address,
  • date of collection,
  • test required, and
  • specimen source.

Samples for PCR may be submitted in several ways:

  • Paraffin embedded tissue on glass slides
  • Paraffin block
  • Air-dried or Tzanck smear on glass slide
  • Fresh or frozen tissue. The use of formalin is discouraged
  • Fresh body fluid. (blood, vitreous, CSF) Blood should be collected in EDTA, NOT HEPARIN. There must be a separate tube collected for PCR tests. Tubes that have been opened and sampled for other tests will be rejected.

Normal turnaround time is estimated to be 3-5 days depending upon the day the sample is received.
