Training in anatomic pathology (AP) is integrated with that in clinical pathology (CP) throughout the four-year general pathology (AP/CP) program in this department. Residents are actively involved with AP in all four years, and the on-call resident covers both AP and CP.
All pathology residents start the formal AP experience by completing required rotations in autopsy (forensic) pathology and surgical pathology. The first year usually encompasses six months of autopsy, four months of surgical pathology, and two months of clinical chemistry. Over the subsequent three years, residents will complete an additional two months of autopsy, eight months of surgical pathology, four months of cytopathology, two months of dermatopathology, and two months of renal pathology. Two-month elective rotations may be taken in any of these subjects, or can be arranged in research, immunopathology, neuropathology, electron microscopy, or cytogenetics.
