The department participates in the electronic residency application service (ERAS). Applicants who are medical school seniors should follow the usual procedure of the matching plan. Those who have already completed a year or more of post medical school training are handled individually by the department and should contact the program director about openings. ERAS is usually online by mid-August and we review applications through December. Interviews usually take place between November 1 and January 31. Please read the FAQs below before contacting us.

Please read the following FAQs before contacting us:
- Do you have cutoffs for USMLE Scores?
Although higher scores make an applicant more competitive, we do not have cutoffs for USMLE scores and evaluate each application on an individual basis.
- Do you have cutoffs for date of graduation from medical school?
No. But in your ERAS essay you should explain what you have been doing during the time between graduation and the present.
- Does your program take International Medical Graduates (IMG)?
Yes. We accept applications from IMG and evaluate them in the same pool with those from US medical graduates. IMG from several countries have successfully completed our program. See the section above for International Medical Graduates (see above) for additional application requirements.
- What can I do to make myself a more competitive applicant?
Although it helps to have good grades and USMLE scores, experience in pathology is a definite plus. Having some experience in pathology helps to support the applicant's claim to knowing what a career in pathology entails, and that he or she has the basis to make an informed decision to commit to pathology as a career. Most applicants have taken at least one elective in pathology in medical school or have been involved in research in which pathology plays a role. Medical students coming here to take an elective in pathology become more than just a name on an application. We have also had applicants and residents who have prior work experience as medical technologists. Applicants should request letters of recommendation from at least one pathologist who is familiar with their work.
