Department of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education

Introduction

The Department of Chaplaincy and Education provides chaplaincy ministry to the Medical Center. Through our accredited programs of ministry training, we combine ministry and education, serving both the patients of the medical center and ministers seeking to become more effective servants of the people.

Chaplaincy

Chaplains at the Medical Center serve as members of the health care team, providing support to patients, families and staff. This ministry of compassion has been a part of the Medical Center for 50 years, and has grown along with the medical center. This history and growth make the chaplaincy and education program not only the oldest in the Southeast region, but one of the largest of its kind anywhere.

Chaplains at the Medical Center serve in a number of capacities. The Department of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education provides 24-hour on-call ministry within the hospital. Chaplains provide crisis ministry to patients and families around the clock, across the full range of medical, emotional, and spiritual crises.

Director

Chaplains provide regular, ecumenical worship opportunities in the medical center in the beautiful Davis Memorial Chapel. The Chapel also affords a space for patients, families, and staff to come for quiet prayer and reflection. Chaplains serve as members of Medical Center committees, providing expertise in ethics, spiritual care, and education.

Education

Clinical Pastoral Education : "CPE" is theological and professional education for ministry. In CPE, theological students, ordained clergy, members of religious orders, and qualified laypersons minister under supervision to people with a variety of pastoral needs. CPE proposes to study "the living human document" of both self and other, toward the ends of more authentic and effective ministry. The Department of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education offers CPE year-round in several settings and at various levels of specialization. All are accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.

Educational Resource Network : Through its faculty of chaplains and supervisors, the Department of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education offers educational resources and programs to chaplains, congregations, ministers, and church leaders.
