Personal Profile

Dr. May is a native of Winston-Salem, having been born and raised in the shadow of the Wake Forest University/Baptist Hospital Medical Center. He graduated from High Point University with a B.S. in Biology and continued on to Medical School at what is now Wake Forest University School of Medicine. (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine) After 2 years in the general surgery-training program at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, he joined the Department of Otolaryngology for completion of his residency training in Otolaryngology Head and Neck surgery in 1988 and joined the full time faculty of The Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship in Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery at the Zurich University Hospital in Switzerland in 1990.

Dr. May is the author of several book chapters in textbooks of otolaryngology and also co-authored a textbook on Tympanoplasty, Mastoidectomy and Stapes Surgery with Dr. Ugo Fisch in Zurich Switzerland. He currently is on the Board of The Fisch International Microsurgery Foundation and is the United States representative. This organization is dedicated to the training of surgeons around the world in techniques of microsurgery of the ear and skull base.

Professional associations:

Dr. May is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.
He is a member of many national professional societies including The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, The American College of Surgeons, The North American Skull Base Society, The American Neurotology Society, The American Society of Head and Neck Surgery, and the Society of University Otolaryngologists.

He has been very active in the local Forsyth- Stokes-Davie County Medical Society over the past decade having served several years on the executive committee, and also as treasurer and secretary. He is currently serving as the President of this society.

Academic activities:

In addition to responsibilities of teaching at the medical center, Dr. May is very active in the teaching of techniques of microsurgery of the ear and skull base through his association with the Fisch International Foundation of Microsurgery. He has lectured and organized courses in both The United States and Europe. He is the director of the Temporal Bone Dissection Laboratory at The Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This laboratory is currently equipped with four dissection stations. We are planning to expand the lab to eight stations during the 2001-2002 academic year to allow expanded teaching in microsurgical techniques.

Current clinical research includes the completion of phase 2 FDA trials of a new implantable hearing aid device developed by Soundtec Inc. in Oklahoma City under the guidance of Dr. Jack Hough. The results have been very promising for individuals who have had problems using traditional hearing aid devices. It is hoped that approval for general use of this device will be approved within the year.
