Daniel J. Kirse, M.D. Associate Professor
Residency Program Director

Clinical Interests:

Pediatric Otolaryngology Clinical interests: all aspects of Pediatric Otolaryngology including: chronic ear surgery, cysts and tumors of the head and neck, endoscopic and reconstructive airway surgery, cochlear implantation, neck infections, vagus nerve stimulator implantation

Biographical information: Dr. Kirse joined the faculty of Wake Forest in July of 2002. Prior to this, he served for five years on the academic faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO.

Dr. Kirse received his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. After this, he completed his general surgery internship and Otolaryngology training at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, AR. During his training in Little Rock, Dr. Kirse decided to devote his professional career to the care of children with diseases of the head and neck. Therefore, he completed a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Subsequent to this, Dr. Kirse was recruited to the
University of Kansas to help establish a tertiary care pediatric otolaryngology practice at the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO. While in Kansas City, Dr. Kirse and his partners quickly established the premier referral center in western Missouri and Kansas for the care of children with complicated problems associated with the head, neck and airway. During this time, he was also an active participant in the cochlear implantation program at the University of Kansas and the vagus nerve stimulator program at Children's Mercy Hospital.

Currently, Dr. Kirse's clinical practice covers all aspects of Pediatric Otolaryngology. In addition to caring for routine problems related to the tonsils, adenoids, and ear infections, he has an active practice related to complicated ear and airway problems. He also routinely provides surgical care for children with benign and malignant masses of the head and neck. Dr. Kirse will be expanding the pediatric otology services to include cochlear implantation in addition to tympanoplasty and surgery of the mastoid. Dr. Kirse has been involved in teaching other surgeons the technique of Vagus Nerve Stimulator implantation and will continue to be active in this area.
