Introduction
The advent of modern molecular techniques has resulted in a tremendous explosion of new information concerning the cellular and molecular nature of disease processes. With this surge of information, training in biological sciences has naturally shifted towards these areas. The challenge now facing biomedical scientists is to translate this raw information into valuable insights into the interactions between genetic, environmental, physiologic and disease processes in organ systems or whole animals. Currently, few scientists have training in instrumentation methods which will permit examination of these complex systems.
The Mouse & Rat Microsurgical Techniques Workshop arose from long standing collaborations between Drs. Thomas Smith and Michael Callahan, Transonic Systems Inc. and Millar Instruments. Their ongoing aim is to develop instrumentation for acute and chronic hemodynamic measurements in small animals. These two companies are known for producing instruments which are the "gold standard" in blood flow and pressure respectively. Over the past several years Millar and Transonics have worked to miniaturize their products to permit investigators to take advantage of the tremendous explosion of information concerning new genetic models. Over the past 20 years, Data Sciences International Inc. has pioneered the field in small implantable telemetric units for measuring arterial pressure, heart rate and ECG. ADInstruments is proud to support this educational event at Wake Forest. ADInstruments is a leading developer of data acquisition hardware and software solutions for life science research. The PowerLab system enables simultaneous real time data recording, analysis and reporting. The success of these companies means that scientists can now perform complex hemodynamic measurements in genetically altered rats and mice both acutely and chronically.
The goal of this course is to introduce scientists to a number of techniques which will enable them to examine complex physiological responses. The course will focus on the surgical skills, techniques and "tricks" which permit acute and chronic instrumentation in small animals. The course will also expose participants to powerful data collection and analysis software designed to facilitate study of these complex physiological systems.
Target Audience
This course is designed for research investigators and technicians who would like to develop surgical skills in acute and chronic instrumentation in small rodents.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, the participant will be better able to:
- Isolate and catheterize small blood vessels (200µm)
- Place flow probes on small blood vessels.
- Catheterize small arteries and veins
- Intubate small rodents and maintain respiratory support
- Provide pre and post operative care to small rodents
- Describe integrative approaches to complex hemodynamic monitoring
