Location of facility:
Gray Building, Room 3091

Laboratory purpose:
To make a laser light scattering instrument accessible for use by appropriately trained investigators. Technical training is also available for interested users.

Laboratory capabilities:
Static (intensity) light scattering measurements (SLS) to determine the molecular weight of purified macromolecules. Dynamic light scattering measurements (DLS) to determine the Stokes radius (or translational diffusion coefficient) of purified macromolecules. Particle size distributions of mixtures can also be determined by DLS.

Instrumentation:

  • Brookhaven Instruments BI-200SM motorized goniometer
  • BI-2030 AT autocorrelator
  • Microcomputer
  • 35 mw He-Ne laser (Spectra Physics 127)
  • 10 W Argon ion laser (Coherent INNOVA 300).
