Benefits

Students attend classes and gain practical experience in the professional atmosphere of a recognized academic medical center and university. Courses which receive academic credit are taught on the campus of UNCG, which is approximately 25 miles from Winston-Salem. Clinical experience is received at the Medical Center and numerous clinical affiliates. (Professional liability insurance is paid by NCBH to cover students in training). Students enrolled in the program have access to resources and libraries at UNCG and Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Financial assistance is available in the form of loans, and possibly government traineeship grants. Scholarships are limited in number and are awarded on the basis of need. Veterans’ benefits may be applied for eligible students. Students needing financial assistance must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form

(http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/).  The UNCG financial aid office can help students explore financing options. Depending on institution needs, the Medical Center occasionally offers scholarships in exchange for an employment contract following graduation.

Students in the program are covered by a professional liability policy paid for by the hospital. All students receive a taxable monthly stipend from Baptist Hospital during the 24-month program. Because the program is demanding, part-time work as a registered nurse is virtually impossible. Home responsibilities and extracurricular activities are best minimized, as the student must devote full-time to this 2 year training commitment.

Student Expenses

Tuition for the non-clinical residency is $2,900 per year, payable to NCBH at the beginning of each academic year. University tuition is paid separately to UNCG. Refer to the graduate bulletin for current rates (http://www.uncg.edu/grs/).

Miscellaneous expenses include books for the entire program, which are purchased on the first day of registration (~$2,500); a single printing fee for the large number of printed materials distributed to the student ($300); a Student Activity Fee to assist in graduation expenses ($20/year); electronic case tracking ($99/year; fee subject to change by the vendor), Associate Membership in the AANA ($100 one-time), and an anesthesia ear piece for continuous patient monitoring ($50; appointments for fittings will be scheduled during the first two weeks of school). Students must furnish their own PDA compatible with our electronic system of case tracking and clinical evaluations.

The student should have at least two standard length white lab coats. Although no other special uniform is required, the student is required to abide by a professional code for dress and appearance. Operating room attire is supplied by the hospital.

Minor medical care may be received through the employee clinic of the hospital, however students are responsible for major medical expenses. Hospitalization insurance is required by both the hospital and the university. Coverage may be arranged during hospital orientation. Associate membership in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists is strongly encouraged. The fee is $20 for the two-year educational period.

In addition to the above expenses, the student should also consider housing, meals, transportation, and loss of income during the educational period. A portion of expenses are offset by a residency stipend of $1,800/year from NCBH and frequently by grant funding from the federal government (All expenses quoted on this page are subject to change without notice).
