The Brain Tumor Center of Excellence was formed in 2003 as a collaborative effort between neurosurgery, oncology and radiation oncology. The Center is focused on becoming a national leader in patient care and research.

Patients come from all over North Carolina, the Southeast and beyond to seek care from this team of highly-experienced, nationally recognized experts in all facets of brain tumor treatment and study.

Image-guided surgery plays an important role in many of the brain and spine procedures performed at Wake Forest Baptist.  Neurosurgeons at Wake Forest Baptist perform nearly 1,000 image-guided surgery procedures each year.

The advantage is that it allows tremendous precision – a way to see through or around things to visualize what’s coming next – so that adjustments or refinements can be made as the surgery proceeds.

The Parkinson’s Surgery and Deep Brain Stimulator Clinic evaluates patients for treatment options specific to the individual’s needs.  Once patients are evaluated by the multidisciplinary movement disorder team, a decision may be made to implant a deep brain stimulator.  This neurosurgical intervention has helped many patients restore their movement functions and lead more normal lives.

The Neurovascular Surgery Program specializes in the care of patients with diseases related to the blood vessels of the central nervous system. Patients whsuffer from subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and other vascular disorders such as stroke and carotid artery disease can depend on our expertise to provide comprehensive, patient-focused care. The program consists of specialists in neurosurgery, neurointerventional radiology, neuroimaging, radiation therapy, nurse specialists in neurosurgery.

Wake Forest Baptist neurosurgeons are participating in the first national investigation of an artificial disc in the cervical spine.  An artificial disc allows surgeons to relieve the symptoms of a ruptured disc and minimize damage to adjacent discs and the disc joint.
