Neurosonology
Dr. Tegeler directs this ICAUL accredited laboratory which performs over 3,500 extra- and intra-cranial neurovascular ultrasound studies per year. The laboratory has four full-time sonographers and the most advanced ultrasound instrumentation, including Color Velocity Imaging-Quantification (volume flow rate measurement), transcranial color-flow imaging, transcranial Doppler, and Doppler embolus detection. This laboratory, established over 30 years ago by Dr. William McKinney, participates in numerous research and educational activities. It was the first in the United States to use transcranial Doppler sonography. Neurosonology has been a popular elective for residents, who can also participate in the Neurovascular Ultrasound Courses sponsored by the Center for Medical Ultrasound and the Department of Neurology. Recently, most residents have obtained certification in neurosonology from the American Society of Neuroimaging during their training. Residents also participate in the weekly Clinical Neurosonology Conference. All Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease Fellows actively participate in the performance and interpretation of neurosonographic tests. Fellowships in Neurosonology can be arranged.
