B. Todd Troost, M.D.
Professor
Emeritus

 

Dr. Troost was raised in Mankato, MN and graduated magna cum laude from Shattuck Military Academy in 1955.  He majored in biophysics and received a B.S. degree from Yale University, with honors, in 1959.  He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1963.  He did a medical internship at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Colorado and then became a flight surgeon for the U.S. Army, initially training both in San Antonio, Texas and at Fort Rucker, Alabama before spending thirteen months in Korea.  He returned as a Medical Officer to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver in 1966.  Thereafter, he completed his residency in Neurology at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver in 1969.  He was an NIH-sponsored fellow in neuro-ophthalmology under the direction of William F. Hoyt at the University of California-San Francisco in 1969 and ran the Neuro-ophthalmology Fellowship Program at UCSF while Dr. Hoyt was on sabbatical in 1970.  Thereafter, Dr. Troost did another year of fellowship in the Ocular Motor laboratory of Dr. Robert Daroff at the University of Miami before joining the Neurology faculty.  Dr. Troost was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1972.

  Dr. Troost was continuously funded by the Veteran’s Administration for twelve years for the study of human eye movements.  He joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh as Vice-Chairman under Dr. Mack Reinmuth and was the Chief of the Neurology Service at the Pittsburgh Veteran’s Administration Hospital.  In 1980, Dr. Troost moved to Case Western Reserve University as Vice-Chairman of the Department under Dr. Robert B. Daroff and became Chief of the V.A. Neurology Service, Cleveland.  Dr. Troost studied in a Master’s degree program in computer science at Case Western Reserve University 1980-1983.

In 1983, Dr. Troost became Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.  He has been active in clinical trials research including trials of therapy for dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, migraine, stroke, and multiple sclerosis during his tenure as Professor and Chairman of Neurology.  He received a Program Project Grant P01-NS27500 in 1991 entitled “Cardiac Surgery and Cerebrovascular Complications.”  At that time, Dr. Troost was appointed as Professor of Anesthesiology.  Dr. Troost received the “Golden Apple” Award for clinical teaching in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 2001 and 2002.

On the clinical side, Dr. Troost serves as an attending physician in regular rotations with other members of the adult faculty on the Neurology wards at N.C. Baptist Hospitals, Inc. as well as attending on the Consultation Service.  He sees patients particularly in the fields of neuro-ophthalmology, headache, and dizziness three half days per week.  He has become one of the leaders in the use of Botulinum Toxins for the treatment of headache. Shortly after his arrival and the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dr. Troost studied neuro-sonology under the direction of William F. McKinney, M.D. and received his certification in neuro-sonology in 1992.  Dr. Troost reads studies in the Neuro-sonology laboratory one day per week. 

Married to Gail Troost, Dr. Troost has two children, Elizabeth and Laurie.  Dr. Troost enjoys gardening, landscaping, cooking, interior decorating, and computers.  Dr. Troost was the webmaster of five major neurologic websites and was very active in developing the Department of Neurology website.
