Clinical Rehabilitation



The Program in Rehabilitation at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center includes a wide variety of comprehensive inpatient and outpatient programs. Intensive hospital inpatient rehabilitation care is provided at the Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation located on the main campus of the Medical Center. The 27 bed general Rehabilitation Unit treats patients with both neurological and musculoskeletal disorders including stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, multiple trauma, major joint replacement, and a variety of other conditions. A dedicated 12 bed Acquired Brain Injury Unit provides specialized care for persons with traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury in a supportive and closely supervised environment. All inpatient programs are CARF accredited and consistently demonstrate superior clinical outcomes compared to national bench marking standards. The Sticht Center includes spacious "state-of-the-art" gym facilities, and many other unique features including an indoor therapy pool, a horticulture room, and special discharge planning apartments.

Outpatient services are provided at CompRehab Plaza, a freestanding facility one block from the main Medical Center campus. This recently constructed facility has been specially designed to integrate physician office with therapy services. Special programs include, sports medicine, general musculoskeletal rehabilitation services, the Hand Center, neurorehabilitation services, and the Occupational Rehabilitation Program. The latter includes a comprehensive interdisciplinary Functional Restoration Program for persons with chronic nonoperative back and neck pain. A variety of therapy services are offered including single discipline and interdisciplinary treatment. Support programs include a work evaluation area, Assistive Technology Center, Driving Evaluation Program, and an indoor pool.

The Rehabilitation Program of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center includes physicians academically based in the Departments of Neurology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Family Medicine, Plastic Surgery, and Section on Geriatrics. Non-physician members of the rehabilitation team include rehabilitation nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, dieticians, neuropsychologists, counseling psychologists, and chaplains.
