Endowment Naming Opportunities

Endowment Needs for Faculty Appointments

Center Directorship:            $3,000,000
Endowment of the directorship—to provide salary support, research supplementation, and travel stipends—recognizes this high priority position as reserved for one with a record of exemplary achievement in medicine. It empowers the University to recruit and retain a distinguished professional of the highest caliber, such as its inaugural director, Kristy F. Woods, M.D., M.P.H.  The financial stability offered through an endowed directorship relieves budgetary strain and permits the allocation of resources to other key components of the Center’s mission.

Center Professorships:       $1,500,000
An endowed professorship in the Center recognizes the priority of highly qualified research and clinical faculty to design and administer the programs that will fulfill the Center’s mission. Endowed professorships provide the requisite financial support for faculty as detailed for the Center Director above.

Endowment Needs for Programs

Community Outreach:        $2,000,000
Programs to disseminate crucial health information to the public and to health care providers are important to eliminate disparities in health. Consideration will be given to the public’s needs and expectations about methods and venues for outreach programs. Successful community outreach includes such areas as workshops, seminars, health fairs and cultural sensitivity training for health care professionals who work with minority populations.

Minority Student & Faculty Development:          $2,000,000
Career development opportunities, mentoring programs, and other innovative approaches are needed to boost minority representation in the biomedical sciences and health care professions.

Research:      $2,000,000
This endowment provides funds to enhance participation in basic, clinical, epidemiological, social and behavioral sciences research related to minority health. Multidisciplinary research efforts are needed to meet the national strategy to diminish racial and ethnic health disparities.

Visiting Scholars Program

Angelou Center Medical Fellowship: $1,000,000
Elimination of health disparities in the United States demands continued and focused research by well-trained scholars with expertise in disciplines such as clinical investigation, social science, medical anthropology, health policy, and epidemiology. Angelou Center fellows will gain training and skill development in minority health research that can be reintegrated to their home institutions and/or communities.

Angelou Center National Symposium:  $1,000,000
Endowment for the national symposium ensures the Center’s ability to disseminate new information about and collaborate on minority health disparity issues at the national level. The symposium will bring together nationally recognized scientific and medical scholars to present findings and discuss strategies for improving the health status of minority populations.

Angelou Research Center Lecture Series:           $250,000
The biannual (spring and fall) lecture series supplements the national symposium’s focus on minority health research and community outreach. The lecture series will sponsor nationally recognized visiting faculty and leaders in the health care professions to address issues pertinent to the goal of lessening the disparity in health status among the nation’s citizens.
