Specialty Diagnostic Laboratory

This Specialty Diagnostic laboratory is one of many unique Wake Forest University School of Medicine Laboratories that have been developed to meet the needs of specialized testing needed by area physicians and hospitals. This laboratory is the only region facility that performs several major critical laboratory tests including: L/S testing (fetal lung maturity), Sweat Chloride testing, Alpha-1 anti-trypsin, acetylcholinesterase, and C3 complement. This laboratory serves as the reference laboratory for Wake Forest University School of Medicine Cystic Fibrosis Center as funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

 

Test: Lung/Surfactant – P/G Analysis on Amniotic Fluid
          L/S PG

Purpose of Test: To determine fetal lung maturity prior to delivery.

Specimen Required: Please provide indications for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.

Amniotic Fluid

  • Draw 8-10 mls of amniotic fluid in a container. 
  • Vaginal pulls are acceptable if necessary.
  • Keep specimen on ice or refrigerated 4-8oC.
  • DO NOT FREEZE.

Average Turn around Time: Same day if received by 1:30 p.m.

Test: Sweat Chloride – Sweat

Purpose of Test: To rule out Cystic Fibrosis as measured by an increase in the salt content of an individual’s sweat.

Specimen Required:  Please provide indications for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.


Sweat Collection

  • Sweat test are a scheduled office procedure at Wake Forest University Physicians through Pediatrics.
  • We do not accept sent in specimens due to specialized specimen weight measurements. 
  • Our patients will be done in the Pediatric Clinic between 9 am-noon, Monday through Thursday.
  • To schedule a sweat test, phone the Pediatric clinic at 713-4500.
  • Specimen can be held up to 48 hours in a refrigerator at 4-8oC.

Average Turn around Time:    Generally, the same day.

Test: Acetylcholinesterase Activity

Purpose of Test: To rule out Hirschsprung’s disease.

Specimen Required: Please provide indications for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.


Biopsy

  • A rectum, suction biopsy needs to be brought to the lab within the hour of attaining for flash freezing.

Average Turn around Time: Generally, the same day.

Test: Alpha-1 antitrypsin

Purpose of Test: To serve as an aid in the diagnosis of several conditions including juvenile and adult cirrhosis of the liver and pulmonary emphysema.

Specimen Required:  Please provide indications and ICD-9 codes for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.

Peripheral Blood

  • A peripheral blood sample should be collected by venepuncture (red top tube), allowed to clot naturally and the serum separated as a soon as possible to prevent hemolysis.
  • The serum may be stored up to 48 hours in a refrigerator at 2-8oC prior to the assay, or for prolonged storage kept at -20oC.

Average Turn around Time: 72 hours

Test:  Complement 3

 

Purpose of Test:       To serve as an aid in the diagnosis of several conditions including recurrent infections, systemic lupus erythematosus and glomerulo-nephritis.
 

Specimen Required:  Please provide indications and ICD-9 codes for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.

 

 Peripheral Blood

A peripheral blood sample should be collected by venepuncture (red top tube), allowed to clot naturally and the serum separated as a soon as possible to prevent hemolysis. The serum may be stored up to 48 hours in a refrigerator at 2-8oC prior to the assay, or for prolonged storage kept at -20oC.
