Sweat Collection

Sweat test are a scheduled office procedure at Wake Forest University Physicians through Pediatrics.

We do not accept sent in specimens due to specialized specimen weight measurements.

Our patients will be done in the Pediatric Clinic between 9 am-noon, Monday through Thursday.

To schedule a sweat test, phone the Pediatric clinic at 713-4500.

Specimen can be held up to 48 hours in a refrigerator at 4-8oC.
Average Turn around Time: Generally, the same day.

Test: Acetylcholinesterase Activity
Purpose of Test: To rule out Hirschsprung’s disease.
Specimen Required: Please provide indications for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.

Test: Alpha-1 antitrypsin
Purpose of Test: To serve as an aid in the diagnosis of several conditions including juvenile and adult cirrhosis of the liver and pulmonary emphysema.
Specimen Required: Please provide indications and ICD-9 codes for testing on our referral form with each specimen. Accurate testing and interpretation may otherwise be compromised.
Peripheral Blood

A peripheral blood sample should be collected by venepuncture (red top tube), allowed to clot naturally and the serum separated as a soon as possible to prevent hemolysis.

The serum may be stored up to 48 hours in a refrigerator at 2-8oC prior to the assay, or for prolonged storage kept at -20oC.
