Refresher Course
Course Description-
The five hour PALS Refresher Course utilizes small group learning stations to review current concepts of pediatric emergency care. In the learning stations participants will review essential skills and PALS concepts. Participants will receive training in effective team skills as a vital part of the resuscitative effort and will have the opportunity to practice as a team member and a team leader.
Course Objectives-
Ø Recognize and initiate early management of conditions that may result in pediatric cardiac arrest
Ø Demonstrate proficiency in providing pediatric BLS care, including providing effective chest compressions and integrating pediatric AED use
Ø Recognize and manage pediatric cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care
Ø Identify and treat pediatric patients with respiratory failure or shock
Ø Recognize signs of neonatal distress and manage neonatal complications
Ø Demonstrate effective communication as a member of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
Prerequisites-
Ø Participants must provide a copy of a recent PALS Provider card
Ø Participants must provide a copy of a current BLS (CPR) provider card
Ø Participants must have a working knowledge in pediatric rhythm interpretation and cardiovascular pharmacology
Ø Participants must obtain a copy of a current PALS Provider Manual (available in bookstore)
Ø It is strongly recommended that participants complete the pretest (on the CD included in the PALS Provider Manual)
Course Completion-
Ø Megacode testing station – Demonstrate appropriate PALS skills and concepts in a simulated pediatric emergency scenario
Ø Closed book written exam – Score a minimum of 84%
