Basic Life Support
(BLS for Healthcare Providers)
Provider Course

Course Description
The five hour BLS Provider Course utilizes both video and practice sessions to enable participants to recognize emergencies, such as sudden cardiac arrest, and how to respond to them.

Course Objectives:

Ø       Demonstrate basic steps of one and two rescuer CPR for adults, children, and infants

Ø       Demonstrate rescue breathing and bag-valve-mask ventilation

Ø       Demonstrate proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Ø       Demonstrate techniques for relieving foreign body airway obstruction in adults, children, and infants

Ø       Name the links of the chain of survival and the importance of each link

Prerequisites

Ø       Participants must obtain a copy of a current BLS Provider Manual (available in bookstore)

Ø       It is strongly recommended that participants view the short video segments and other reference material on the CD (included in the BLS Provider Manual)

Course Completion

Ø       Skills testing – Demonstrate appropriate BLS skills and concepts in simulated cardiac arrest scenarios

Ø       Closed book written exam – Score a minimum of 84%
