Stent
Stent

A stent is any material that is used to hold tissue in place. Stents are often used to support tissues while healing takes place. A stent can keep "tube-shaped" structures such as blood vessels open after a surgical procedure.

An intraluminal coronary artery stent is a small, self-expanding, stainless steel mesh tube that is placed within a coronary artery to keep the vessel open. This stent may be used during a coronary artery bypass graft surgery to keep the grafted vessel open, after balloon angioplasty to prevent reclosure of the blood vessel, or during other heart surgeries.

Getting the Most out of a Stent
The stent is becoming the mainstay of interventional treatments. Heart Center cardiologists use stents aggressively, often combining them with catheter-based procedures so the stent can be expanded, enlarging the opening for blood flow. The Heart Center is often selected to test new technology, such as more flexible stent models, giving our patients access to the latest treatments.
