Ethnic Food

Eating out should be a healthy experience, as well as a pleasurable one. Although you will need to make conscious choices about the foods you order, you'll soon find that these choices become easier and more natural for you.

Listed below are some suggestions that may help you when ordering in an ethnic restaurant. Remember: When in doubt, always ask the server to describe the dishes for you.

Chinese

Stir-fried chicken, seafood, or bean curd (tofu) with vegetables; lean beef with vegetables and steamed white rice

Ask that dishes be prepared without MSG (monosodium glutamate).

Dishes that are deep fried such as: sweet & sour chicken, pork or shrimp; crispy fish; fried rice; fried wonton noodles; and egg rolls

Hunan and Szechuan-style dishes where the meat is fried in hot oil

Other: Egg Foo Yong, Peking Duck, lobster sauce, soy sauce

Italian

Linguine with red clam or mussel sauce; pasta primavera; pasta marinara; spaghetti with tomato sauce, green peppers, mushrooms and onions

Cheese Pizza (thin or thick crust) with green peppers, onions, mushrooms and no extra cheese

Lasagna, Fettuccine Alfredo, Veal Parmigiana, Spaghetti & Meatballs

Pizza with pepperoni, extra cheese, Italian sausage, beef, ham and olives

Mexican

Ceuche (marinated seafood); bean, seafood or chicken burritos or enchiladas; tacos without sour cream or guacamole, minimal cheese and meat; Chicken Fajitas

Beef and cheese chimichangas or tostados; fried tortilla chips; guacamole; sour cream; fried ice cream
