Resident Education
The General Surgery residency program at Wake Forest University is committed to providing a complete surgical training experience for the next generation of general surgeons and the surgical leaders of tomorrow. The residents rotate through the core rotations in general surgery and the subspecialties at multiple points during their training, with increasing amounts of responsibility each year. Surgeons trained at Wake Forest are ready to meet the technical demands of surgical practice, with well over 1000 major cases per graduating resident. We have developed a general surgery curriculum that incorporates the key competencies of general surgical training and the fundamental principles of surgery. This curriculum is used to focus direction of the resident conferences and to aid in preparation for the yearly in-service exams. All of our graduates have gone on to become board-certified surgeons since the first graduating class of 1942. Time to attend grand rounds and conferences is protected, so that the residents have every opportunity to benefit from the planned educational program. Our general surgery training program continues to enjoy the support of an exceptionally dedicated and expert faculty. This will continue to be a key component of any successful surgical educational experience, for the art and science of surgery is caught, as much as it is taught.
