Pediatric Surgery
Brenner Children’s Hospital houses the busiest pediatric surgical center in Western North Carolina and is one of only three pediatric surgical centers in the state. |

Dr. Pranikoff and Dr. Turner provide an experience in Pediatric Surgery which is true general surgery. Categorical general surgery residents rotate for two months as second year house officers and three months as fourth year house officers. There is no pediatric surgery fellow therefore all of the experience is available for the general surgery residents.

The resident deals with all areas of the body obtaining a large portion of their thoracic and cervical experience while on pediatric surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is emphasized and taught and helps the residents develop detailed skills needed in this developing area of surgery. Being the only ACS accredited, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in the state, our residents are exposed to a large amount of pediatric trauma and burns. We manage all of our patients in the pediatric intensive care unit thus provide an experience in the management of advanced ventilator management and critical care issues. Pediatric surgery is a hands-on rotation and the residents will have the exposure that will allow them to feel comfortable with any pediatric surgical case that they may face in their general surgery career. Our service is a valued experience for the residents in that there is close supervision and interaction with the attendings in the operating room as well as the critical care areas.
