Endocrine Surgery and Chief Service
This core rotation is comprised of an integrated experience on the chief resident’s general surgery service and the endocrine surgery service. The rotation is staffed by a dedicated chief resident and second year surgery resident.
The chief’s service provides inpatient and outpatient surgical care of the full range of general surgical patients. With consultation from attending surgeons, the chief’s service is managed by a chief resident with assistance from a second year surgery resident. Patients are evaluated and followed up in the OPD Surgery clinic. The rotation provides valuable independent experience in the overall management of surgical patients including the evaluation and diagnosis of general surgical disease, surgical decision making, operative management, and post-operative follow up.
Commonly encountered pathology ranges from breast disease, skin cancers, hernias, and biliary disease to more complex gastrointestinal and endocrine disease. Dedicated block time in the operating room is reserved for the chief’s service in the outpatient suites for non-complex operations as well as the inpatient suites for more complex surgery. The chief’s service is also available for emergency department and inpatient consultation and management. This rotation fosters improved efficiency in the clinic setting as well as experience in clinical administration and maintenance of referral relationships. |
