Research Opportunities A wide range of research opportunities is available for the resident during his or her year in research. Examples of recent research opportunities include clinical research in cardiovascular surgery, Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation, vascular surgery, surgical oncology, and trauma surgery. In addition, the resident is encouraged to pursue contributions to the surgical literature, both before and after the devoted year of research. Furthermore, opportunities are available to provide longer period of research for the individual choosing such an option.
The Bradshaw Surgical Research Fellowship, an endowed research fellowship named after the first Chairman of the Division of Surgical Services, sponsors at least one general surgical resident per academic year for a research fellowship protected from clinical responsibilities. For those residents entering this year of clinical research, several wide-ranging opportunities exist, from clinical or basic-science research done under the mentorship of a surgical faculty member, to visiting yearlong research fellowships at other institutions. Participation in the Bradshaw Surgical Research Fellowship typically results in several peer-reviewed publications, comprehensive experience in various aspects of clinical and basic surgical research, and the opportunity to present one’s research at regional and national scientific meetings.
Research opportunities exist within all of the clinical services in the Department of General Surgery, as well as in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The recent establishment of a Fellowship in Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery has further enhanced the spectrum of what is available within the Division of Surgical Sciences for residents interested in research.
Specific areas of research are described within the research interests of the individual faculty members. |
