| Carl J. Westcott, M.D. Assistant Professor Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery Publications | Dr. Carl J. Westcott is a member of the laparoscopic surgery service. He received his bachelor’s degree at Dickinson College and his M.D. degree from Hahnemann University in 1991.
He completed his General Surgery residency at Hahnemann University Hospital and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Duke Medical Center, graduating in 1997. He then joined the Wake Forest faculty, and directs the department’s efforts in laparoscopy.
Dr. Westcott’s clinical practice has been devoted to advanced laparoscopy since 1997. Since joining the faculty he has focused on advanced laparoscopic surgery, with particular emphasis on gastroesophageal reflux, gallbladder disease, abdominal wall and groin hernias, diseases affecting the colon, solid organ, and living related kidney donor surgery.
Dr. Westcott’s research focuses on quality of care, technology assessment, and policy evaluation in the field of surgery. Some recent activities are outcomes in anti reflux surgery and management of postoperative ileus. His approach to teaching involves a supervised intensive resident experience where direct patient care and surgical decision making is emphasized.
