| Perry Shen, MD., FACS. Assistant Professor Surgical Oncology Publications | He is 1 of 3 clinical faculty members of the Surgical Oncology Service. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of California, Irvine in 1988, and received his medical degree at the University of Southern California in 1992.
His internship was performed at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (1992-1993) and his general surgical residency was obtained at the University of Southern California + Los Angeles County Medical Center (1993-1998). He completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute from 1998-2000. After his surgical training, Dr. Shen joined the faculty at Wake Forest University in August 2000.
Dr. Shen's clinical interests are related to general surgical oncology with a focus on hepatobiliary malignancies. He has expertise in the areas of melanoma, sarcoma, liver and pancreas tumors, and gastrointestinal cancers. He is director of the Hepatobiliary Oncology Multidisciplinary Conference at the Outpatient Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Shen is the principal investigator for several protocols studying novel therapeutic modalities for primary and metastatic hepatic malignancies. These involve radiofrequency and microwave ablation of unresectable liver tumors, and adjuvant hepatic arterial infusion therapy via implantable pump. He is also part of the Wake Forest University program of Cytoreductive Surgery and Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Chemotherapy for Peritoneal Carcinomatosis, which is the second largest program in the country. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group and the Surgical Liaison for Wake Forest to the Cancer and Leukemia Group B Cancer Cooperative. He is also the recipient of several intramural grants funding translational research involving the genomic analysis of metastatic colon cancer in collaboration with the cancer biology department.
Besides his administrative and teaching duties involving the Wake Forest Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Surgical Oncology Service, Dr. Shen is also the co-chair of the Legislative Committee for the North Carolina Chapter, American College of Surgeons and a member of the ACS Committee for Young Surgeons.
