He joined the Department of General Surgery in August as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the specialty of Laparoscopic and Obesity Surgery.

He graduated from Georgetown University in 1993 with a degree in Chemistry and went on to earn his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine in 1997.

Dr. Fernandez completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery Research with Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1996. After General Surgery residency training at the Medical College of Virginia, 1997 to 2002, he completed a fellowship in Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia in 2003.

Dr. Fernandez is board certified in General Surgery. His special areas of interest are obesity and laparoscopic surgery.
