He received his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University, earning a B.S. in Molecular Biology.  He earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and did his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham as well.  He went on from there to complete a two-year fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and joined the faculty at Wake Forest in 1994 immediately after completion of his fellowship training. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, and holds certificates in General Surgery and Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care.

Dr. Chang’s clinical practice covers the scope of trauma surgery, burn surgery, and critical care medicine. His clinical and research interests include cardiovascular function during shock resuscitation, the physiologic effects of intra-abdominal hypertension, ventilator-associated pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome, and abdominal wall reconstruction after trauma. He has spoken at numerous national and international scientific meetings on these topics, and is a recognized expert in the field of shock resuscitation and hemodynamic resuscitation.

He is also Associate Director of the General Surgery Residency Program, and works with Wayne Meredith MD, David Albertson, MD, and Ms. Judith Marion in administration of the General Surgery Residency Program.
