Catherine H. Messick Jones, M.D., M.S.
Interim Section Head

The Section on General Internal Medicine is committed to enhance and support the Medical Center’s mission in the domains of Patient Care, Education, and Research. The Section accomplishes this by providing exemplary patient care, creating an environment conducive to academic excellence, and conducting clinical trial and health services research.

Primary patient care is provided by GIM faculty/physicians who are located in clinics at the Medical Center in the University Internal Medicine Associates (UIMA) and the Reynolds Health Center. GIM also oversees care provided by Internal Medicine residents at the Reynolds Health Center and the Medical Center General Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinic. Additionally, the GIM faculty/staff provide several inpatient services at the Medical Center and provide inpatient and pre-operative consultation services.

Education features an emphasis on evidence-based General Internal Medicine practice and includes weekly GIM conferences (Wednesdays 1 PM) and periodic workshops and seminars. GIM faculty members are integral to the Medical School curriculum in all years of undergraduate experience, as well as the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Research, conducted at highest scientific standards, targets areas such as access to care of underserved populations, aging and geriatric care, professional education, and medical informatics. Clinical research is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Public Health Sciences, sections on Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Social Sciences & Health Policy. Members of the Section work in collaboration with the Medical Center’s Health Services Research Center and the Women's Health Center of Excellence.
