GI Fellowship

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is a challenging, three-year experience that allows physicians to build the foundation for a career as a gastroenterologist. The faculty is committed to the training and development of fellows as they become skilled, ethical, and compassionate consulting specialists. Two fellows are admitted into the program each year.

Significant patient care, teaching, and research responsibilities will be an integral part of the training experience in GI, which is divided into half-month rotations, each with specific responsibilities, including:

  • GI Consult Service
  • General Endoscopy
  • Ambulatory Clinic
  • ERCP/ Therapeutic Endoscopy
  • Research

In addition, each fellow will have regularly scheduled days in the clinics throughout their fellowship experience, and will share on-call duties with other fellows. Opportunities to perform such procedures as liver biopsies will also be incorporated into the training.

Conferences are an important part of the fellowship experience; these will include, at various times throughout the three years:

  • GI Grand Rounds/Case Conference
  • GI Core Curriculum
  • GI Journal Club
  • GI Pathology Conference
  • GI Radiology Conference
  • GI Surgery Conference
  • Basic Science Conference
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conferences
  • Research Conference

In addition to conferences, clinics, and rotations, fellows will be expected to attend all department meetings as their schedules permit, and they will have significant teaching responsibilities. Developing an understanding of the ethical principles of the practice of medicine is also an extremely important part of the training program.

Evaluations of each fellow will be conducted semiannually by faculty members. In addition, each fellow will be asked to complete an evaluation of each faculty member semiannually. The evaluations are conducted according to specific criteria established by the program faculty.

The section will provide funding for the purpose of attending a national scientific meeting. In addition, fees for North Carolina licensure will be provided, as such licensure is an absolute requirement for fellowship training.

All fellows are encouraged to join the AGA and ASGE during their fellowship. These memberships will make many educational materials available and will provide the basis for a long-term involvement with these professional societies. Any application or membership fees will be paid by the section.
