Integrative Medicine
Integrative, holistic, complementary and alternative medicine practices and therapies are widely used. Generally referred to as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) or Integrative Medicine, actual practices and therapies are highly varied. For example, they include folk and home remedies, herbs used for health purposes, acupuncture, biofeedback and meditation. Research being conducted in the Department of Family and Community Medicine examines CAM as one component of overall health self management. Projects focus on describing the prevalence of CAM use in different segments of society; understanding the factors that contribute to the initiation and continued use of these therapies; and, finally, the health-related consequences of CAM use for individuals and their contribution to health inequalities.
