Our comprehensive care is about more than medicine.

The Sticht Center on Aging serves as the major catalyst for developing models and synergism in the areas of clinical care, research, and education across all departments at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center to provide regional and national models of health care that improve the health of the elderly in the Piedmont Region and beyond.

Fellowship training in Geriatric Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine is presently a 12-month clinical track which utilizes the substantial resources of the newly constructed $40 million J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation. The Sticht Center is a state-of-the-art geriatric clinical and research center which combines the resources of the Department of Psychiatry, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Section on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine of the Department of Internal Medicine.

A number of Family Medicine residency graduates have been accepted into the Fellowship tract administrated by the Department of Internal Medicine and have coordinated their continuity clinic experience as well as other teaching and selected geriatric exposures through our department here in Family Medicine.

There are presently 11 Faculty directly involved with the Fellowship Program at the Center on Aging, with at least over 20 Faculty members involved via interdepartmental and Pepper-Center related research projects. Wake Forest University is one of only ten geriatric centers in the United States designated as a Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center. The entire Wake Forest University Department of Internal Medicine is involved in Geriatric Medicine related research projects of various kinds. The Clinical Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program is currently approved to train four fellows per year.
