The Family Practice Center
Our new 20,000 square foot Family Medicine Center opened its doors in February 1992. This model practice occupies an entire floor in a community office building that was formerly the headquarters for Piedmont Airlines. Less than a mile from The WFU Baptist Medical Center (comprised of North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Wake Forest University School of Medicine), the Family Medicine Center offers patients, staff and physicians the benefits of a community setting, while maintaining ready access to The Medical Center via a van shuttle service. The outpatient volume approaches 60,000 office visits per year.
Four patient care modules, each with ten examination rooms, nursing station, reception area, waiting room, and consultation / dictation, provide the backbone for the Center. There is also a large treatment room with a special sigmoidoscopy / colposcopy suite. Also on this floor are our laboratory, x-ray facilities and business office. Renovations of the reception areas, waiting rooms, and nursing stations were completed in the spring of 2000.
The adjacent floor houses the faculty offices, a large resident lounge, library, and multiple conference rooms. There is also a large area for our Center for Health Promotion activities, including an exercise and treadmill facility. Dietitians and certified diabetes educators are also located on this floor and are available for appointments.
There are over fifty providers at the Center, including faculty, residents and physician assistants. In addition, medical students from Wake Forest University School of Medicine rotate through the center to learn about Family Medicine. We provide care between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. In addition, we have evening hours on Thursdays. An emergency clinic is available Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM for urgent problems; routine appointments are not available on Saturdays.
