Engineering Department
The NCBH Engineering Department is comprised of approximately 167 employees who are divided into three specialized components: Maintenance, Central Utility Services, and Grounds. The department provides services for over 3.8 million square feet throughout the NCBH complex, plus 2.5 million square feet of parking deck space 24 hrs. per day, 7 days per week. In addition, Engineering personnel are responsible for the Life Safety Systems throughout the campus and responsible for many areas of the Environment of Care for JCAHO compliance.
Maintenance personnel consist of Electricians, Mechanics, Decorators, AC/R Mechanics, Carpenters, Utility Workers and various management personnel. These key people take care of the mechanical operating systems, such as plumbing, electrical, fire alarms, paging systems, cable television systems and many others, throughout the facility. Personnel also take care of such tasks as painting and wallpapering. All hospital buildings are divided into zones, which allows our personnel to focus their attention on particular buildings and specialize on equipment located in their specific areas.
Also included in this group are the Customer Service personnel who are the point of contact for all calls from customers, whether you have a plumbing problem, a light out or it is too hot. Each month, the maintenance personnel complete approximately 9,000 work requests, including corrective issues and preventive maintenance that is scheduled to keep systems running smoothly. It is their goal to answer all call regarding patient areas within 30 minutes, no matter the time of day or
night.
Central Utility Services consists of the Power Plant Operations as well as procurement and distribution of electrical power and water. NCBH operates its own Power Plant to generate chilled water and steam to the entire campus. Controls Technicians and Power Plant Operators continuously monitor the equipment to ensure that all systems are at peak performance throughout each building. Power Plant Operators also maintain emergency generators that supply the facility with emergency electrical service in the event of a failure from Duke Power Company.

The Grounds Team of Engineering is responsible for the maintenance and beautification of the hospital grounds. Their duties include everything from planting the flowers that enhance our entrances to mowing the lawns and trimming trees. This group installs a major portion of the Christmas lighting around the campus and is responsible for snow/ice removal during harsh winter weather.
