Experience of Medicine Elective
Course director: J. M. Ernest MD
Who’s eligible: 1st and 2nd year WFUSOM medical students
Credits: Transcript Recognition
Grading scale: Complete/Incomplete
Rationale for course
Students benefit when they are exposed to as many aspects of medicine and health care as possible. Since students frequently recognize the areas in which they have little or no exposure and identify areas in which they would benefit from additional exposure, opportunities to "fill in the gaps" will allow students to self-assess and become more well-rounded physicians. In order to increase the variety of experiences in medicine to WFUSM students, this elective was developed.
Description of course
The Experience of Medicine elective may occur at any time up to the completion of Phase IV or the seventh semester. The student first identifies a clinical situation in which he/she wishes to participate. The student next identifies a preceptor in that area of interest and receives permission from that preceptor to work with them. Prior to beginning the elective, the student must complete an Experience of Medicine elective form and submit it to the Office of Student Services giving the student's name, proposed date(s) of the experience, primary preceptor with whom the student plans to work, brief description of the student's role, and expected outcome of the experience. Upon completing the clinical work, the student must notify the Office of Student Services that the experience has been completed, document the observed outcomes of the experience, and note the date of completion. A separate form (see link below) must be completed for each area of clinical interest in which the student works. Credit for the elective will not be awarded until the student verifies their participation in the experience and this notification has been received by the Office of Student Services. Multiple clinical experiences are encouraged, but not required. Only one transcript recognition will be awarded, regardless of the number of differing experiences the student pursues.
